Lot Essay
Jean-Yves Mock worked at the Hanover Gallery in London from 1956 until its closure in 1973. He worked alongside the founder of the gallery, Erica Brausen, where they supported both established artists and new talent. Amongst these were British artists Francis Bacon, Reg Butler and William Scott, all of whom exhibited widely at the gallery. When the Hanover Gallery closed, Jean-Yves Mock went on to work as a curator at the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
On the reverse of the present lot is a study for Slagheap landscape, 1952-53 (Arts Council Collection, Hayward Gallery, London).
Sarah Whitfield is currently preparing the Catalogue Raisonné of works in oil by William Scott.
