Lot Essay

These two scenes were designed for but never included in The Flight into Egypt, Domenico's series of 24 plates published in 1753. It is thought that they were ultimately rejected because they are after designs by his father Giovanni Battista, and the frontispiece of the series proclaimed that all the prints were by Domenico after his own designs.
