The inscription on the present watch details that it was "Presented to Richard U. Sherman by his Friends, Members of the Assembly at Albany April 1854".
General Richard Updyke Sherman (1819-1895) was a respected businessman and politician from Utica, New York. He began his career in the mercantile trade, however soon found that his interests lay in writing. He took a position as a news writer for a local paper and within a few years was the Editor of the Daily Gazette. In 1848 Sherman and Robert W. Roberts founded the Utica Morning Herald. While he continued his pursuits in the news, Sherman turned to politics becoming the clerk of the New York Assembly in 1851 and an assembly member in 1857.
Sherman was a well-known and beloved member of the community. His civic interests were wide ranging. In addition to being an assembly member Sherman was also Chief of the Fire Department, Brigadier General of the 21st Brigade of the New York State Militia and a commissioner for the New York State fisheries. His son, James S. Sherman served as Vice President under William Howard Taft.
