Lot Essay

The premiere for Otto Preminger's film, The Man with the Golden Arm, was more than a simple celebration of a film's release with a popular star in attendance - Frank Sinatra in this case. It was also a historic moment in the battle against Hollywood censorship. Preminger opened the film in defiance of the Motion Picture Association's Production Code Administration ban against movies dealing with narcotics. The film was so successful that the Code was changed and filmmakers were henceforth allowed greater freedom than they had experienced in decades.
