Lot Essay
This painting depicts a scene similar to that illustrated on p. 28 of Week's book, From the Black Sea through Persia and India (New York, 1895). Having traveled through parts of Turkey, Weeks found himself and his party crossing Armenia, with Armenians and Kurds, and pausing for lunch on a plain below the foothills, with a snow-covered Mount Ararat rising above the hills. In two more days of travel, the party would reach Persia, which may explain some confusion with the manuscript titling on the verso of the painting.
