Sold for the Benefits of "Action Sabrina" Christie's are proud to offer the following six lots, 136 to 141, to be auctioned to benefit the "Action Sabrina" Association. "Action Sabrina" originated from an encounter between Christiane Dawson and Sabrina, a two-year old girl suffering from cancer. Deeply moved by the time spent with the little girl during a children's Christmas party, Christiane Dawson decided to create a charitable association benefiting children touched by this illness. In memory of Sabrina, who passed away a month after their meeting, she founded "Action Sabrina" in 1993, which she has been actively presiding ever since. The purpose of the association is to help cancer-stricken children and adolescents undergoing treatment at the Geneva University Hospital, regardless of their nationality. In close collaboration with the Pediatric Oncology Department, "Action Sabrina" provides psychological and educational support to these children and their families, supplies amenities such as games, videos and books to the hospital ward, and organises outings as well as an annual Christmas party. The aim is to do everything possible to ease the pain of these sick children and to bring some joy into their lives and those of their families. Funds are raised through a variety of events and through donations. As all administrative costs are borne by the "Action Sabrina" Committee members, all funds that are raised can be entirely applied to the association's goals. The following six lots have been donated by a lady distinguished by her taste for rare and unusual contemporary timepieces. These watches, created by the most prominent manufacturers Patek Philippe, Rolex and Girard Perregaux represent the ultimate combination of fine watch making, modern design and innovative technology. They stand for self-confidence and style and are, without exception, very difficult to obtain from the official retailers as often either sold out or with considerable waiting lists. Many of these models have never been offered at auction before as only presented to the public during the last twelve months. In particular, the spectacular Patek Philippe annual calendar reference 4937 and the much advertised Rolex GMT-Master II reference 116748 are true pearls in the sea of modern horology.

Lot Essay

Accompanied by Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin dated 30 May 2007, instruction manuals, original fitted wooden presentation box and outer packaging. The present watch has never been offered in public before and is believed to be one of only three examples of this reference to appear at auction to date.

Reference 5396 was introduced to the market in 2006 and pays tribute to the firm's celebrated Calatrava model, launched in the 1930s. The smooth pink gold case is of the distinctive, classic round Calatrava style of reference 96 and stands out by its large size. The appealing graphic design of the dial is inspired from a late 1930s historical "Calatrava" wristwatch, on permanent exhibition at Patek Philippe's prestigious museum in Geneva. With its double railway track scale this well-proportioned two-tone silvered dial adds a subtle technical flourish to reference 5396 which furthermore differs from the other annual calendar models by its striking new design: for the first time, this patented mechanism features twin in-line day and month apertures beneath 12 o'clock.

With its modern yet ageless design, reference 5396 immediately became a classic amongst collectors.
