Lot Essay
During the early 1950's, Rolex launched reference 6062, which is seen by many collectors as the ultimate Rolex wristwatch. In fact, together with reference 8171 (see lots 59 and 63 in this auction), it is one of only two models to show the date, the weekday, the month and the phases of the moon. It was also the first Rolex model ever to be fitted with the so-called Super-Oyster Crown.
Only very few examples of reference 6062 were made - cased in either yellow or pink gold, or even more rarely, in stainless steel. To further enhance the watch's individuality and exclusivity, a variety or dial designs were available, few with the most popular star-shaped numerals.
The present watch is one of the most beautiful and desirable examples of this legendary reference: made in 1950, it is cased in pink gold and still retains its original Jubilée bracelet, a rarity by itself.
Overhauled by Rolex in Geneva in 1991, it is preserved in outstandingly original and unspoilt condition and fitted with the highly sought after "star" dial, representing an extremely fine collector's watch.
