The Bath: five states plus preparatory drawing (B. 143; M. & S. 5; B. CR 801)
five drypoint, aquatint and soft-ground etchings (two in black and sanguine, two in colors) plus the preparatory drawing, circa 1891, on various laid and wove papers, four signed in pencil (including the drawing), two annotated 'état,' Breeskin's third, fourth?, (not in B.), sixth, and seventh states (of eleven), Mathews and Shapiro's second, third?, fifth, sixth, and tenth states (of seventeen), the prints with full margins, the drawing the full sheet, the prints all with surface soiling, (third/second state) with printing and handling creases throughout, a red spot at the upper right image, glue remains in places along the margin edges, (fourth?/third? state) printed in black and sanguine (B. states it is printed only in black and that the tone in the background is soft-ground; M. & S. note the tone as aquatint and extending into the floor; both describe a drypoint line along the the top of the tub that extends to the left edge, not present here) with a few small rubbed areas in the center and lower right image, a few foxmarks, a few small tears and paper losses at the margin edges (particularly at the lower right corner), hinges at the reverse of the upper margin corners (staining through), ([not in B.]/fifth state) with scattered foxing (primarily in the margins), a few nicks and tears at the margin edges, (sixth/sixth state) with the yellow plate printed slightly off register (as noted in B. and M. & S.), a few nicks, creases and tears at the margin edges, two red spots on the reverse, (seventh/tenth state) with two skinned areas at the center right image (with associated ink loss), occasional pressure marks throughout, some creasing, tears and paper loss at the margin edges, all with hinge or tape remains in places at the reverse of the margin edges, (drawing) with soiling and offset oil staining in places (primarily along the sheet edges), a diagonal black ink streak at right, creasing along all four sheet edges (apparently where folded over a printing plate), paper loss in places along the right sheet edge, otherwise all in good condition
all P. 12½ x 9¾ in. (318 x 248 mm.)
all S. approx. S. 17 x 12 in. (432 x 305 mm.); and
(drawing) S. 14½ x 10½ in. (368 x 267 mm.) (6)
