Lot Essay

Levenson printed the entire edition of 75 plus 10 artist proofs.

In the autumn of 1978 Avedon presented a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 'Avedon: Photographs 1947-1977'. The theme was his fashion work, though the non-specific title invited spectators to read the images within frames of reference far broader than the label 'fashion' might have implied. This was the context in which Avedon created the present portfolio and he chose to concentrate on the most electrifying images made on location in Paris through his earlier years as a photographer -- years in which he arguably re-invented the language of fashion photography.
