Lot Essay

American painter Hilaire Hiler (1898-1966) owned several jazz clubs in Paris, including The Jockey, on the Left Bank. He was Managing Director of Atelier Hilaire Hiler and was associated with James Joyce, Man Ray and Ernest Hemingway, among others.
