Lot Essay

Wanda de Guébriant has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Matisse spent the summer of 1939 in Paris, where he produced portraits of various artist friends. He was particularly drawn to the distinguished and striking appearance of the Romanian painter Theodor Pallady, the sitter in the present work.
