Lot Essay

In a letter from Sandra Blow to a previous owner on 15 October 1991, which is attached to the reverse of this work, she writes 'I confirm that the painting which you have bought from Mr Gay was painted by me sometime in the sixties, probably the late sixties'.

In the early 1960s Sandra Blow began to use found objects from her studio to build up the surface of her works. She used tea to stain the surface of her canvases and took ash from the stove and fire in her studio to create different textures and effects. Untitled demonstrates her use of collage and mixed media, in which she is able to extend the possibilities of the medium and free the surface. The colour that she increasingly used towards the ends of the 1960s is evident here.

After her second solo exhibition at the New Art Centre in 1968, she said 'I'd like to do enormously simple but rather dramatic paintings that held a terrific impact and a sense of speed - a kind of flash going across the painting, perfectly balanced, in unity with all the other elements' (M. Bird, Sandra Blow, Aldershot, 2005, p. 97).
