Lot Essay

Whilst Feiler's work from the 1950s was predominantly based on Cornish landscapes, in 1954 the artist travelled to the Italian lakes of Gandria and Isola Bella and visited the city of Florence.

The present view, showing the roof-tops of Florence with the instantly recognisable outline of the Duomo, is captured in the artist's bold style using a palette of strong colours with much black, highlighted with the ochre of the roof tiles. This palette is used to great effect, particularly in the broad black vertical strips to the extreme left and right of the picture plane, a compositional device which frames the view and draws the eye in.

For further information on the artist please see the catalogue note to lot 9.
