Property from the Estate of Richard E. Gager, Atlanta, Georgia Richard Edwin Gager (1921-2007) was a descendent of Dr. William Gager who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony from Suffolk, England on the fleet's flagship Arabella in 1630 and whose family went on to become early settlers in Connecticut. Richard Gager, having volunteered for the United States Navy, served in the North Atlantic as a boat officer on USS LST 374. He went on to participate in the top-secret Exercise Tiger at Slapton Sands, Devon and beginning on D-Day he made repeated trips to transport landing forces from troop ships to the beach for the historic Normandy landings. Having been stationed in Fowey, Cornwall, Gager developed a life-long love of England. In the late 1940s Gager moved to Atlanta where he took a keen interest in music and the arts. He was an avid member of the High Museum's Decorative Arts Group and he donated various artworks to the Museum before he died including work by Lynn Chadwick, David Hockney, Henry Moore and the impressive 1941 oil on panel, Cottage by the watercress bed by John Piper, given to the Museum in memory of Ralph R. Randall, Jr.
