George Augustus Wetherall was born in Penton, Hampshire in 1788 and died at Sandhurst in 1868. Son of General Sir Frederick Wetherall, he was educated at the Royal Military College and entered the army in 1803. From 1822 to 1825 he was military secretary to the commander-in-chief of Madras, and in 1826 he was appointed deputy judge-advocate-general in India. He served during the rebellion in Canada of 1837/38 as Commander of the Royals' 2nd battalion in the Battle of Saint-Charles fought between the British and Lower Canada Patriote rebels. After the victory of the British he and his troops unearthed the Colonne de la liberté in Saint-Charles and brought it back to Montreal as a trophy of war.
For his services Wetherall was made a companion of the order of the Bath. On his retirement from the army in 1865 he was appointed governor of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.
