Lot Essay

This drawing relates to a watercolour illustrated in Mary Taubman's Gwen John, London, 1985, no. 71. After John had moved to Meudon, she occasionally executed landscape studies in watercolour and gouache of local subjects; the wooded lanes and the houses. The same subject also appears in two tiny sketches measuring less than 1½ square inches on a page of compositional notes dated '11 Mars 32'.

The inventory number, allocated by Edwin John, Gwen's nephew and also her executor, is accompanied with the inscription '11/set of 18' (on the reverse), from which we may assume that the present watercolour forms part of a series of drawings of this subject.
