Winslow Homer drew these two portraits of Elizabeth Loring Grant during a summer stay at his family's home in Belmont, Massachusetts in 1866. His ability as a draftsman is evident in these works as he employs an economy of line to adeptly capture the spirit of the 14 year old girl as well as the beautiful lines and drapes of her dresses. An independent and modern woman, Elizabeth Loring Grant insisted that these drawings be passed down through the women of her family, where they have remained.
