Lot Essay

A fine steeplechaser, Ambush II was foaled in 1894 by the Irish Derby winner Ben Battle, out of Miss Plant, by Umpire. He was bred by William Ashe and trained by Gratton Wildman Lushington. He was bought by Lord Marcus Beresford for the Prince of Wales and won eight chases including the Grand National in 1900 ridden by Algernon Anthony. He beat the favorite Hidden Mystery and Manifesto, who had won the previous year.
