Lot Essay

Leigh encountered the gnu, hartebeest and eland whilst at the Chapin camp, eighty miles from Nairobi. 'Soon the small antelope and gazelle swarmed in countless thousands, with eland, kongoni, and topi running together in the same company. A herd of a thousand zebra insisted upon crossing and recrossing our course, doubling back and crossing again, sometimes as often as four times. The gnu would kick up their heels and perform eccentric capers, often swerving, circling, and cavorting, and engaging in sham battles with one another. The eland would leap into the air and prance, but the impala were the champions.' (W.R. Leigh, Frontiers of Enchantment, London, 1939, p. 124 and 126).
