Lot Essay

Kelly's cows were supposedly inspired by Dobell's papier mâché cows commissioned from the artist during the war to camouflage rural runways. The present composition, which clearly derives from Nolan's famous drought photographs and subsequent paintings, was also cast in bronze and exhibited at Les Champs de Sculpture II on the Champs-Elysées, Paris in 2001.
