Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1989
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A). Château-bottled
Tasting note: First noted at a tasting arranged for me by the late Jean-Paul Valette at the Maison du Vin in St-Emilion. Alongside the other 1er grand cru St-Emilions it had extra dimensions. Interestingly, though 'not remotely the weight of the first growth Médocs', its alcoholic strength is higher, 13 A wine of distinctive charm and elegance. At the New York masterclass in 1995 I couldn't help noticing its 'legs' (a habit of mine); a refreshing wine on nose and palate. Deliciously sweet, 'not a blockbuster'. Two years later, at the Wolf/Weinart Cheval Blanc tasting, it was showing much more maturity than the '90; sweet, ripe, soft tannins, 'charm' noted again. We were informed that it was a very early harvest, between 7 and 27 September and a very big crop. Next noted in its tenth year: mature looking; perfect harmony; the lightest in style, easiest of the eight first growths. A lovely wine though. Most recently, in jeroboam, tasted blind: rich, chocolatey, mocha nose - could only be Right Bank; soft, chewy, elegant, lovely. Last noted at the Eigensatzs' Hotel Eden-Parc in Bad Schwalbach, Oct 2001 ***** Now-2015. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
