Tasting note: For long one of the stars of the saleroom, and one can see why. Curiously, first tasted in 1985 at the Simi Winery in Sonoma with Thelma Long, the star winemaker well known in California. Very courageous of Thelma to pitch her regular (not reserve) Cabernet Sauvignon alongside some '82 first growths. The Simi came out well, only half a notch below Pétrus. My first comparative tasting was with the other 10-year-old first growths. My highest mark, a rare enough 19/20. Just so sweet, rich, fleshy, fruit packed, rounded. Next, a massively impressive double magnum, showing a bit of maturity; sweet, fragrant, harmonious nose and taste to match. Lots of grip, lovely wine, needs time (Rodenstock dinner 1995). And, the following month, in Hong Kong, a similar note: lovely, rich, fleshy. In Brussels in 1996, a similar velvet-lined mouthfiller but, I thought, lacking subtlety and finish. Most recently, at Kaplan's '82s dinner, with noisettes of Virginia lamb, by now less deep in colour; bouquet fully evolved and justly deserving about every praise one could heap upon it. Last tasted April 1997 ***** Life everlasting. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
