Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1975
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé. Château-bottled
Slight sign of seepage. Bin-soiled label. Level very top-shoulder
Tasting note: Fourteen notes. Unquestionably a lovely wine. First tasted dining at Ch Margaux in 1981 when its youthful acidity was very noticeable. Progressing from a pale golden colour in the early 1980s to a richer gold, its bouquet fragrant but immature, slightly raw, becoming more floral, peachy, the common denominator being its sweetness, flesh, life and length. Notable bottles with illegal ortolan -même sous la serviette, c'est interdit- at Frans de Cock's fabulous wine weekend in Paris. With its sheer delciousness showing up the 1970 at the Bacchus Society Installation Dinner in Coral Gables, and on a par with the 1959 but a different style at the Munich tasting. Most recently, sheer pefection: creamy, honeyed, orange blossom bouquet of impenetrable depth; rich, perfect weight, flavour, balance and length, with another 20 years to go. Last tasted at the Josey pre-sale tasting in New York Nov 2000 ***** Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
