COS D'ESTOURNEL

Cos is a landmark familiar to all who travel the routes des châteaux on account of its pagoda-like facade; it is strikingly placed on a hill overlooking Lafite.

Cos has usually been considered the leading Saint-Estèphe and certainly develops more finesse and breed in bottle than any other, as well as being long-lived

Saint-Estèphe, 2me cru classé. Château-bottled
Levels into neck
Tasting note: Fourteen notes tracing its progress from a surprisingly easy-going cask sample in May 1983. It then seemed to stiffen its resolve. Recent notes include bottles which though good were upstaged by quite a few of the 30 or so of Kaplan's '82s in 1997. Later the same year, a pretty powerful jeroboam, siphoned into decanters in Bob Dickinson's cellar at 12.30 pm for the Bacchus Society dinner that evening. My best and most recent note: good colour, mature, red brown rim; well nigh perfect bouquet, gentle, harmonious; surprisingly sweet though finishing dry, good fruit. Last noted at a comparative tasting of '82s and '89s at the Hotel Louis C Jacob, Hamburg, March 2000 **** Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
