Lot Essay

This portrait can be dated stylistically to the mid-1650s. The traditional identification of the sitter as Jane, wife of Sir Nicholas Pelham (c. 1650-1739), can be discounted on the basis of her husband's dates and the fact that the couple were married in November 1764. Lely did paint other female members of the Pelham family, for example Lady Lucy Pelham (d. 1685) (Private Collection, UK).
