Lot Essay

The present work was very likely painted in the summer of 1893 when the artist spent several months in Huelgoat, Brittany. The likely setting of Dévotion à Saint Herbot is the fifteenth century church dedicated to this saint, at the nearby village of Berrien. Saint Herbot, a sixth century Breton saint, was the patron saint of horned animals, and very popular among rural inhabitants in the area.
