Born in Bavaria in 1880, Hans Hofmann lived and painted in Paris in the early 1900s and later established an art school in Munich in 1915. In 1930, Hofmann moved to the United States at the age of fifty to teach at the University of California, Berkeley, whose museum holds a substantial body of his work. He eventually settled and established the art schools in both New York and Provincetown for which he is well known. Many of Hofmann's ideas towards modern art were forged during the years he lived in France and Germany.
