Lot Essay

Jayashree Chakravarty's canvases are often bustling, crowded and teeming with energetic imagery and line. Her recent work moves away from the cartographic and figural themes that had dominated her paintings in the 1990's to a more spiritual subject matter. In this work from 2001 Chakravarty has masterfully maintained her characteristic use of heavy line and impasto. Chakravarty has dedicated this work to Hampi former capital of the Vijayanagara empire and a world Heritage site.
