This historic image is the first high quality view of the Earth taken from across the Moon, a dramatic reversal of the traditional 'Moonrise'. It was made on August 23 1966 from Lunar Orbiter 1 as a part of the NASA Lunar mapping missions made between 1966 and 1967 in preparation for the eventual Moon landings.
