Lot Essay

Flint first visited Spain in 1920, returning thereafter to paint the landscape and people. He recalled in his memoirs, 'Between the wars,
with my chivalrous friend Henry Trier, as my guide, I saw an odd
selection of Spain's treasures. It was still the old courteous Spain. As we crossed the frontier we stepped back a hundred years ... There were subjects galore' (W. Russell Flint, In Pursuit, London, 1969, p. 190).
