Lot Essay

The Alabama Hills (the left hand hill) in reality had the huge, whitewashed initials 'LP' [Lone Pine] stencilled on them. Adams considered this 'a hideous and insulting scar on one of the great vistas of our land' and ruthlessly removed what he could from the negative, spotting out any remaining traces in the final print.
