Lot Essay

From 1889 to 1902, Pissarro produced several works depicting the theme of a shepherd herding his flock, including the present pastel, two gouaches, two fan decorations and one drawing. The present work is a direct study for the oil painting Paysage avec troupeau de moutons (J. Pissarro and C. Durand-Ruel Snollaerts, no. 873; fig. 1).
