Lot Essay

Dr. Marian Bisanz-Prakken will include this drawing in her forthcoming supplement volume of the drawings of Gustav Klimt.

The present drawing is a recently discovered portrait study related to Klimt's decorative wall paintings at the Vienna Burgtheater. This study was most likely prepared for Theater Shakespeares: Romeo und Juliet (Novotny and Dobai, no. 39 and Weidinger, no. 64; fig. 1), a ceiling painting Klimt executed for the Burgtheater in 1886-1888, which is currently situated in the southern staircase of the theatre.
