Lot Essay

Being born in 1977 in Beijing, Li Hui has been exposed to a very dynamic milieu and art scenario. He studied in the Department of Sculpture in the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Like many artists and intellectuals of the 70s generation, he has expereinced a very subtle shuttle, being exposed onto an interchanging point between traditional cultures and modernization. On the one hand, he was nurtured and instilled by the traditional culture. While at the same time, he grew up at times when China is constantly undergoing dramatic economic as well as social upheavals. The long-isolated China opens its gate to the world as well as tons of flowing information and new ideas. New ideas manage to bring in new perspectives of perceiving the world yet also posing questions and challenged to how the Chinese construct their identities.
