Lot Essay

The paradox of experiencing the sense of abundance and the absence within this abundance is what intrigues Shetty. His preoccupation with the idea of excess and loss takes yet another form, in this case - a pear. The black colour evokes the negative space and the absence of the pear, however, simultaneously defining the presence of the pear.

Living in Mumbai, a city inundated with objects, the artist is in constant negotiation with the notion of abundance and the nagging sense of absence that lead a parallel existence. The artist feels compelled to address the futility of creating yet another object in this world of abundance.
