Lot Essay

Dr. Baron comments, 'The trees in foreground and background are again fuller and taller than in earlier versions. The design is the same as the Bernheim family painting, except that striations in the surface of the road are indicated in the immediate foreground and a cart is included in the rue St Rémy on the left' (see W. Baron, loc. cit.).

The church of St Rémy, built between 1522 and 1640 is Dieppe's second largest church. In the distance of the present composition are houses in the former rue Farinette (now rue 19 août 1942) which also feature in Sickert's oil, The Haunted House, Dieppe, from 1898-99 (private collection). Unusually for Sickert's Dieppe compositions of this period, the present work is dated (see W. Baron, Paintings and Drawings, New Haven and London, 2006, pp. 231 and 256).
