Lot Essay

D. I. Ermakov was a well-known photographer in pre-revolutionary Tiflis (now Tbilisi). His collection numbered between 40 and 50 thousand negatives depicting the Caucasus region and comprised his own work, as well as that of his contemporaries including A. Roinashvili (1846-1898).
Ermakov's photographic legacy can be found in the Museum for History and Ethnography, Tiflis, and is testament to his interest not only in landscape and cultural monuments but also urban motifs and rituals.
