Lot Essay

The Nobel brothers of Sweden are remembered for their valuable contributions that revolutionized the oil industry. The Nobel family moved to St. Petersburg in 1838 where their father, Immanuel Nobel set up an engineering factory. Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) was a famous chemist and philanthropist who founded the Nobel Prize Fund. His brothers, Robert (1829-1896) and Ludvig (1831-1888) established in 1879 a very successful Petroleum Company which was known as 'Brothers Nobel Oil Company' in Baku, Azerbajdan. The present brooch commemorates the 25 years during which the company operated.
