Lot Essay
Empress Maria Feodorovna (1847-1928), daughter of Christian IX, King of Denmark and Queen Louise, was very close to her sister Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, writing to her every week throughout their lives. The Empress had a very warm and sociable personality and was generous in her affection to those around her and her family. It is natural therefore that she should have given such a delightful gift to her niece, Louise, Princess Royal, who had married the Duke of Fife in 1889, or directly to her great niece, Lady Maud Duff, created H.H. Princess Maud in 1905.
H.H. Princess Maud (1893-1945) married Charles, 11th Earl of Southesk in 1923, whose Scottish residence was Kinnaird Castle a few miles from Guthrie Castle, home of Colonel Ivan Guthrie and his wife Mona. The two were great friends and shared philanthropic interests. [Kathleen] Mona, née Gough, was a descendant of the eminent military commander, Viscount Gough, and had been brought up in the family home in Ireland by her cousin and neighbour, Lady Gregory of Coole Park.
