Special Notice
On occasion, Christie's has a direct financial interest in lots consigned for sale which may include guaranteeing a minimum price or making an advance to the consignor that is secured solely by consigned property. This is such a lot. This indicates both in cases where Christie's holds the financial interest on its own, and in cases where Christie's has financed all or a part of such interest through a third party. Such third parties generally benefit financially if a guaranteed lot is sold successfully and may incur a loss if the sale is not successful. Artist's Resale Right ("Droit de Suite"). Artist's Resale Right Regulations 2006 apply to this lot, the buyer agrees to pay us an amount equal to the resale royalty provided for in those Regulations, and we undertake to the buyer to pay such amount to the artist's collection agent. VAT rate of 5% is payable on hammer price and at 15% on the buyer's premium

Lot Essay

"I wanted to escape from the delimination of skin (whether the exclusive volumes of lead bodycases or the solid volumes of the bodyforms) and acknowledge the body as a place of transformation.

There was a lot of experimentation, but the Domains really got going when I realised I could describe the space of the body as a matrix formed from eight lengths of stainless steel in a reversal of the Greek pointing system, with rods resting on the internal surface of the body.

They are put together with a loose set of rules: one end of each T connection should always be on the original surface and the rods should be as normal to surface as possible.

As this work progressed the minimum member rule arose: to use the least amount of material necessary to convey the attitude of the body (while still allowing it to stand). The work achieved tension.

As with the Insiders, the Domain series is an attempt to separate the subtle from the material body, to abstract an attitude and expose it to light and space.

I see the Domain as a diagnostic instrument, both receiver and transmitter" (A. Gormley quoted at www.antonygormley.com).
