Lot Essay

This drawing is close to a group of landscapes previously attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569) but now considered to be by an as yet unidentified artist active towards the end of 16th Century. He is usually called the Master of the Mountain Landscapes reflecting the subject matter of most of the drawings in the group (N.M. Orenstein, ed., Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Drawings and Prints, exhib. cat., New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2001, pp. 266-7, nos. 120-5).
An attribution to the Anonymous Fabriczy has also been suggested.
