Lot Essay

In 1837 Genelli was commissioned by the publishing house Cotta, original publisher for both Goethe and Schiller, to illustrate two editions of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The present twelve drawings come from this series of 49 sheets and were drawn in preparation for the commission. The drawing for the frontispiece is in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich (inv. no. 1965/45 ZG) (E. Nielsen, Bonaventura Genelli. Werk und Kunstauffassung. Ein Beitrag zur Kunst des Späten Klassizismus in Deutschland, Ph.D., Munich University, 2005, p. 282).
