Part of a group of drawings, 37 of which sold at Christie's, New York, 24 January 2006, made early in Pissarro's career before he moved to Europe. Born in Saint-Thomas in the Virgin Islands to Portuguese-Jewish parents, Pissarro spent nearly two years in Venezuela from 1853-54 with the Danish artist Frits Melbye (1826-1869). The two artists travelled along the coast as well as to Caracas, and Pissarro's drawings record local residents and landscapes.
Three other groups of drawings executed during the Venezuelan sojourn are in the Museo de Bellas Arte, Caracas, formerly in the collection of Hélène Pillement, Paris; the Banco Central de Venezuela, formerly in the collection of Cyrus McCormick, New York; and in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford from the collection of the artist's son, Lucien.
