A "WHITE HOUSE" FOUNTAIN PEN, BY MONTBLANC
Writing implements have witnessed many great achievements in history, from Prehistoric cave wall drawing and Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. From the earliest tools of flintstone and clay pigment, to beautiful functional objects, the tradition of creating writing instruments continues to evolve. In 1906, entrepreneur Claus Johannes Voss and merchant Christian Lausen, with the aid of Wilhelm Dziambor, founded the Simplo-Filler Pen Company, which was later changed to the official trade name, Montblanc, in 1910. Legend has it that the founders decided to name the company Montblanc during a game of scat when an analogy was drawn between the highest mountain in Europe, Mont Blanc, and their desire to create writing instruments of the highest quality. The way individuals express themselves is rooted in the culture of writing, as is Montblanc. For this reason, it is part of Montblanc's mission to promote art and culture in their writing implements. The Montblanc Meisterstück, or Masterpiece, fountain pen collection was introduced in 1924. This collection epitomizes the timelessly classic nature of artwork that is refined by tradition. In 1992, Montblanc expanded its luxury offerings to include highly collectible Limited Editions. Drawing upon many generations of passionate innovation and expertise, Montblanc craftsmen continually surpass even the most discriminating standards of excellence. Elegant sophistication and unmatched performance are the hallmarks of these exquisite collector's items. Christie's is pleased to offer four exceptional pens from the Limited Edition and Meisterstück collections, which illustrate the way that Montblanc has refined a utilitarian object into a functional expression of beautiful design.

Further Details
This pen was created to pay tribute to the architectural style of the famous columned exterior of the White House and its renowned Blue Room. In particular, the striated resin barrel was inspired by the architectural design of that period. The eponymous relationship is also captured in the diamond-studded cap ring, which is a miniature rendering of the south balcony and the clip's eagle symbolizes the United States of America. As a tribute to the succession of Presidents to date, this Limited Edition pen is one of just forty-three of its kind.
