Lot Essay

In a letter to Gustav Schiefler, Kirchner mentioned the present portrait lithograph and dated it to 1919. However, it was only in 1920 that Nele van de Velde visited the artist in Frauenkirch. It must have been then that he drew the portrait onto transfer paper, and probably not before 1923 that he revised the drawing and finally printed it at the Graphischen Anstalt W. Wassermann in Basel.

Gercken has been able to trace only four impressions of this print, probably including the present impression with the Swiss customs stamp verso.

We are grateful to Professor Dr. G/uunther Gercken, L/uutjensee, Germany, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. Professor Gercken is currently preparing the new catalogue raisonn/ae of prints by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
