Düesterer Männerkopf was among Nolde's first attempts in lithography. As noted in Clifford Ackley, et al. Nolde: The Painter's Prints (Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1995), Nolde added the color border in 1915, eight years after printing the original black area. The process partly effaced his original 1907 signature so the artist reinforced it and added a second signature below the color. He then individually numbered the impressions from the 1915 edition of approximately 24.
