Lot Essay

According to the Archives of Montres Breguet, the past of the present watch is rather eventful, explaining the different numbers on case and dial as well as the comparatively high value: originally bearing the number 391, the case number 3515 made by Gros, it was sold to Monsieur Pinssot on 27 Brumaire An 7 (1799) for Francs 1,200. Bought back le Pluvoise An 11 for Francs 960, its whereabouts are unknown until 18 Floreal An 11 when it continued its life with the numbers 1311/391, sold to Monsieur de Noailles. On 3 November 1810 the watch appears again, now numbered 2594 and sold to the Comte de Perigord for Francs 1,194.

Between 1811 and 1831, it changed hands five more times, the last entry in Breguet's books is dated 20 July 1831 when it was sold to "Gl Répé" for the amount of Francs 800 (certificate 3173).

Such eventful history is not at all unusual for antique Breguet watches but show how important and valuable these watches were two centuries ago. As a matter of fact, thanks to Breguet's international fame and the high esteem for his fine timepieces, clients upheld his watches in the utmost respect. Owners of Breguet watches would either trade them against newer models with the firm or invest into an upgrade by adding complications or giving their watch a new look by modifying case or dial.
