Lot Essay

Although the archives of Montres Breguet list a different watch numbered 3492, the present watch was most certainly made by the famous house and shows several of Breguet's characteristics:

- the overall quality and finish is such that one recognizes Breguet's work
- most notably the original enamel dial bearing Breguet's secret signature and number, a feature difficult to copy. In fact, it was Breguet who protected himself against counterfeits with his ingenious and unique "signature secrète"
- the typical ruby cylinder escapement with parachute and bimetallic compensation curb
- the case corresponding in style and quality to cases made by the celebrated Joly for Breguet

Whereas it is commonly known amongst watch collectors that the archives and records of Breguet were meticulously well maintained, one can only imagine that small errors were committed, on rare occasions, by those in charge of this task. Of very good and Breguet-typical quality and style, it is probably such oversight leading to the non-identification of this watch in the workbooks.
