Lot Essay

As per the owner, this lady's wristwatch was previously owned by the iconic Jeanne Toussaint (1887-1978). Creative director of the Maison Cartier, Toussaint epitomised style and good taste. Called the 'Panther', she raised these felines into the high of fashion of the times; one could not forget the Duchess of Windsor's legendary diamond and sapphire-set panther crouched on a Kashmir sapphire cabochon of 152,35 carats. Mistress of the Mogul-inspired 'Tutti-Frutti' style, she is credited for having brought back yellow gold into fashion at a time when platinum was king. Her constant quest of innovation leaded to unequalled craftsmanship and suppleness of movement in her jewels. The English court photographer Cecil Beaton's who used to describe her as a woman of 'small bird-like stature' was struck by her sixth sense, the famous 'gout Toussaint'. Pincess Bibesco crying out of amazement, once said about Toussaint: 'You perfume diamonds!'
