Cyrillic initials R.P. and V.P., circa 1830
Circular, large and small silver medals inscribed and depicting a trophy of the arts and pillar surmounted by the emblem of the Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg, the reverse with a laurel wreath and further inscription, further inscribed in the lower register in Cyrillic K. M. Kuchk., stamped in lower register, the larger in original fitted case
2 in. (5.1 cm.) and 1 7/8 in. (4.7 cm.) diameter
The inscriptions translate as: 'For achievements in painting 1830'; the reverse with 'Small Large medal for encouragemnet from the Imperial Academy of Arts''. (2)

Lot Essay

Founded in 1757 by Empress Elizabeth, the Academy of the Three Noblest Arts, for the study of painting, sculpture and architecture, was the initiative of its first curator, Count Ivan Shuvalov. Catherine the Great granted a special privilege in 1764, and proclaimed the institution as the Imperial Academy of Arts, often known as the St. Petersburg Academy of Art.
